Chapter 27
A
fter a very long day, the three riders climbed the crest of a hill on the outskirts of the village where Ci-Cero had been captured. She dismounted and gathered her medicine pouch. She felt a kind of loss as she stood watching the brothers as they began their journey back to their village, leading Nibbler behind them.
Part of her was excited to be back near the cave, but another was saddened as the brothers waved goodbye when they reached the top of the hill, then disappeared. Nibbler neighed loudly just before they were out of sight, perhaps expressing her feelings about leaving Ci-Cero behind. Ci-Cero had a kinship with these people and simply could not sort out her thoughts and feelings. It would be good to be with Master Wabi again, and she knew he’d help make some sense of her latest adventure.
She began her trek to the hidden cocoon that would lead to the cave. She prayed Rakki would be there, waiting. Otherwise she’d just go around in circles as she had the first time she came upon it. As for Toes, she had remained in her hidden place in Ci-Cero’s pouch, as always.
Wabi’s instructions to never leave without Rakki were given primarily because he was afraid she might meet up with Nezerra. If Rakki were with her, he wouldn’t be so concerned. Since he was not beside her today, she thought it best to move along quickly, hoping to see a familiar tree or bush.
She sped along, aided by a great desire to be with Wabi and Raven, and allowed herself to believe Rakki was missing but nothing more than that. Shortly, she heard a familiar squawking coming from above her head.
“Oh, Bird, thank goodness you’re here. I was afraid I’d be lost in the cocoon.”
She stopped and Raven alighted softly on her shoulder. She reached up and lifted him down to caress his feathers and lightly touched his head. She had never been so happy to see a bird in her life.
If only I could speak to her, thought the raven. He determined then and there to insist that Wabi instruct her in the art of non-verbal language, mostly because he liked to talk a lot.
Wabi sensed Bird and Ci-Cero were nearing the cave and his heart was thankful. She had become so very important to him, much more so than any of his other students. He had never had children even though he had cohabitated with several women over the years. He intuited this was the price of being one of the called, and accepted that this was the plan that had been designed for him. But at this moment, he felt like any parent would when one of their children returns after a long absence. He smiled as Ci-Cero’s lavender-laced scent drifted on the wind, a scent he would always associate with her.
“Oh, Wabi, I have so much to tell you. It's unbelievable even to me, but I must explain it all to you,” she exclaimed.
